A StoneLifting Competition
Pittsburgh Irish Festival
Sunday, September 8, 2024 2 pm
General Rules:
Entry form must be completed and waiver must be read, signed, and dated by every competitor
Competitors go in alphabetical order
Competitors may wear weightlifting belts
No tacky, chalk, or gloves are permitted (dirt off the ground is allowed) nor wrist wraps, knee wraps, or any sort of body suit.
If a competitor is called to lift and fails to show, his lift is forfeit for that event.
If any apparatus fails during an event, it is the competitor’s responsibility to fix it and continue (unless ruled otherwise by SCS staff).
In order to be listed as a finisher, each competitor must compete in every event of the competition. If a competitor fails to compete in any individual event, he will be listed as a DNF—did not finish and will be ineligible for prizes.
If any competitor disputes a ruling by the judge, he must present his case immediately after whichever event he disputes. Ruling will be reviewed promptly by SCS staff via video footage and a ruling determined.
Awards ceremony immediately follows competition; if any competitor fails to stay and receive their awards they forfeit their rights to those awards. Any disagreements on placings or points must be made before the awards ceremony.
Competition Description:
Event 1: Heavy Stone Throw
Competitors will have two attempts at throwing the Pebble Stone (125 lbs) for distance. Best of two throws counts. Competitors must not cross the start line; any touch counts as crossing the line and results in a disqualified throw. Throws may be in any fashion—overhead, chest push, etc. A running start of ten feet will be permitted. The first spot of contact on the ground by the stone will count as the competitors distance thrown.
Event 2: Stone Bear Hug Squat
Competitors will have 90 seconds to complete as many bear hug squats with the Joe Cheplic Pressing Stone as possible. A good lift in this event requires each competitor to have their thighs reach parallel with the ground at the bottom of the lift and knees locked out at the top of the lift. Stone must be hugged to the chest area during the duration of each repetition for a good lift to be given. Stone may not be dropped during the event. If dropped, the competitor ends his squat attempts.
Event 3: Stone Carry and Drag
Competitors have 90 seconds to carry the McClurg Walking Stones around the Stone Circle to a sled where they will then load each Stone into the sled. After loading, competitors will drag the sled by attached rope as far as they can around the Stone Circle in the time remaining. Farthest distance dragged wins the event. Starts and stops permitted as much as needed.
Event 4: Stone to Chest
Competitors have 90 seconds to lift the Dragon’s Head Stone (245 lbs.) to chest level for as many repetitions as possible. A good lift is when a competitor is able to lift the stone and stand in stable position with the stone held above the navel for a 1 second count.
Tiebreaker Event: Stone Over Rope
Two competitors face each other opposite with a rope standing four feet high in between. Competitors will take turns lifting the Dragon’s Head Stone and placing it over the rope into the other competitor’s area until one competitor cannot do so. Each competitor will have 30 seconds to make a successful lift into the other competitor’s area. If a competitor during his lift should break the rope or knock down the apparatus by the stone or by his person, the event is ended and he loses the event. Rope may be touched so long as no damage or restructuring of the apparatus occurs..
