Great Kilt Instruction
wear history. wear legacy.

When you visit Clan McClurg's Stone Circle Strongman tent at any Celtic festival, you will have an opportunity to learn and participate in an ancient tradition: wearing the "Great Kilt."
As someone with Scottish ancestry, it gives me great pride to wear the kilt. What many people don't know, however, is the history of the modern traditional kilt, more specifically, its direct ancestor, what we call the "Great Kilt." Known in Gaelic as "feileadh mor," the Great Kilt is a long blanket-like piece of cloth. It was used in the Scottish Highlands to combat the harsh, windy, and wet conditions from at least the 15th century until the early 19th century. The Great Kilt was eventually shortened into what we know now as the modern kilt (Gaelic "feileadh beag," or small kilt); the Great Kilt, thankfully however, is making a resurgence nowadays for its versatility as well as its style.
I have many great kilts and take pride in wearing them properly and stylishly. At the Clan McClurg tent, anyone interested may be able to learn how to wear and style a great kilt with hands-on instruction. Please check out my instagram page for the schedules and times when I will be offering instruction. I look forward to helping you keep an old tradition alive.
